<text>Research universities and their academic libraries are racing to develop methodologies and solutions for handling research outputs, particularly datasets, visualizations and publication data, in compliance with the growing number of policies and mandates while increasing the impact of the outputs. Researchers are likewise under pressure to do their work faster and more efficiently. They are doing this while also looking for ways to maximize the impact of their research in order to better position themselves to achieve the next big grant, research breakthrough and advance their career. What can we do to move forward collectively and for the greater good? This session will examine the challenges involved by featuring three panelists, two librarians from two different research institutions and a systems developer, presenting the perspectives of the librarian, researcher, and other stakeholders, all in a lively dialogue format. Then, with the challenges identified and listed, the session will look at a possible solution via a new library–led initiative being launched that will bring together a number of universities and Ex Libris in order to develop a new approach to increase visibility, impact and compliance of research outputs and data while serving the multiple stakeholders.</text>

<text>On June 1, 2015, The University of Iowa (UI) Libraries with the support of the UI provost, launched the Digital Scholarship & Publishing Studio. The Studio maintains a physical presence in the UI Main Library and was created by merging the Libraries-operated Digital Research and Publishing department with the campus-operated center called the Digital Studio for Public Arts and Humanities. With nearly a dozen full-funded staff positions, the Studio represents a remarkable commitment of institutional resources to the growth and development of digital scholarship. Housing the Iowa Digital Library (over one million digital objects), Iowa Research Online (the institutional repository), DIY History (participatory archives platform), and faculty and student Digital Editions (non-monographic digital scholarly work), the Studio collaborates with faculty, staff, and students from across the campus and the Iowa City community. This session will include discussion of the administrative movements associated with the merger; the infrastructural support for the Studio within the UI Libraries; and how the Studio is best positioned to usher in 21st century digital scholarship at UI.</text>

<text>Research is the lifeblood of academic institutions. Yet, many in the academia recognize the need for a better, more integrated approach for managing research data throughout the research cycle – a systematic data management approach that would eliminate duplication of effort, reduce the burden on individual stakeholders, and – above all – would support the institutional goal of increasing the impact of research output. Academic libraries are often at the crossroads of increasing their involvement in supporting research output and improving research data management, and are already providing a measure of centralized coherence in their support of academic research. In this session we will discuss the potential role that libraries can play in driving this transition, by leveraging their expertise in data curation, resource management, and content dissemination, and the infrastructure needed for supporting these processes.</text>

<text>In 2011 the University of Iowa Libraries began crowdsourcing the digital transcription of its manuscript archives. Four years and over 50,000 transcribed pages later, that project, known as DIY History, has garnered considerable internet attention via Buzzfeed, Twitter, Tumblr, and the NBC News blog. At the same time, it has been threaded into undergraduate classrooms at Iowa as a means of introducing students to primary source research, information literacy, and multimodal design.Matt Gilchrist and Tom Keegan will discuss how faculty members and librarians collaborated on an assignment that emphasizes course objectives while strengthening student connections to the UI Libraries. That assignment, Archives Alive!, resulted from a partnership between DIY History and Iowa Digital Engagement and Learning (IDEAL). Students are asked to transcribe a document, compose a brief rhetorical analysis and historical contextualization of it, and create screencasts of their work. By making use of narrative primary source material like letters and diary entries, Archives Alive! helps students see themselves in research material. Building an assignment around the crowdsourcing model provides students with two attitudes important to project success: a sense of ownership (through crowdsourced participation) and a sense of purpose (through a dynamic assignment with a real audience). The success of the project rests upon a flexible, design-centered approach to program structure that fosters an audience for library collections while asking students to create work with the public in mind.Paul Soderdahl will discuss the administrative considerations and costs in moving digital library operations from project to program. The UI Libraries have made deliberate efforts over the past several years to achieve this transition – in particular a reorganization of Digital Library Services into Digital Research and Publishing. He will also discuss the relative leap of faith and return on investment associated with large-scale digitization projects and audience engagement. The James Merrill Digital Archive (JMDA) is comprised of digitized Ouija board session transcripts, poem drafts, and other materials toward Merrill’s epic narrative poem, “The Book of Ephraim,” part of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Divine Comedies. The JMDA is the result of expertise and input of many collaborators across the Washington University campus. Shannon Davis and Joel Minor will speak on various aspects of the ongoing project, including successful cross-campus collaboration, employing student workers to perform high-level encoding and exhibit curation, and how Omeka was used to develop the digital archive.</text>
